History and Mission

After the country gained independence, national leader Heydar Aliyev and successor of his policy President Ilham Aliyev always attached great attention to religious issues. Establishment of Azerbaijan Institute of Theology is a logical continuation of this policy. The Institute was established under the subordination of the State Committee on Religious Associations of the Republic of Azerbaijan by President Ilham Aliyev’s Decree dated February 9, 2018.


Since its inception, the Institute has been involved in teaching and research process and established its main structural divisions. Languages and Social Sciences department was formed by the relevant decision dated September 18, 2018, by the Academic Council of Azerbaijan Institute of Theology, according to the order of rector Jeyhun Valeh Mammadov. The department is led by Ilkin Anvar Alimuradov who was appointed by the rector of the Institute. It is directly involved in the training of specialists to maintain and improve religious and moral environment based on the historical traditions of the Azerbaijani people and as the logical consequence of the state policy.


Being one of the main academic divisions of Azerbaijan Institute of Theology, the department is involved in teaching Azerbaijani language and speech culture; Arabic and English languages; History of Azerbaijan; Informatics and Computer Technology; Civil Defense; Introduction to Multiculturalism; History and Geography of Islamic countries and provides opportunities for students’ career development and research work. The department aims to ensure the maintenance and development of religious and spiritual environment, based on the historical traditions of the Azerbaijani people and the logical result of the state policy and educate highly qualified specialists in the organization of religious activities by focusing on the requirements for teaching languages and social sciences.


It guides academic, practical, educational and disciplinary works required for the teaching of languages and social sciences for Islamic and Religious Studies majors. It also monitors the quality of lectures, workshops and other events in the curriculum intended for all educational forms. The department members act in accordance with the laws of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Charter of the Institute. It uses various technical means and methods to improve the quality of the courses and increase the efficiency of the teaching process.
